Research Officer - Bioinformatics

CICR/IMG, University of Queensland

Centre for Immunology and Cancer Research (Princess Alexandra Hospital Campus) and the Institute for Molecular Bioscience (St Lucia Campus), University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia.

The Centre for Immunology and Cancer Research (CICR) and Institute for Molecular Bioscience (IMB) are seeking to appoint a scientist with expertise in bioinformatics to support to researchers at both Centres.

The CICR (http://www.cicr.uq.edu.au) is a University level centre in the Faculty of Health Sciences with over 120 researchers and students, and is based at the Princess Alexandra Hospital. The research activities of the seven Research Teams are divided into two major Programs - Immunology, and Cancer Cell Biology. The Immunology program includes the Research Teams of Professor Ranjeny Thomas (dendritic cell biology), Professor Ian Frazer (epithelial tumour immunology) and Professor Matthew Brown (musculoskeletal disease genetics). The Cancer Biology program includes the Research Teams of Associate Professor Nicholas Saunders (epithelial cell differentiation), Dr Brian Gabrielli (cell cycle control), Dr Nigel Macmillan (virus host interactions) and Professor Tom Gonda (oncogenes in leukaemia and breast cancer).

The IMB (http://www.imb.uq.edu.au/) is a University Research Institute recognised nationally and internationally as one of Australia's leading centres for molecular bioscience research. The IMB has four major divisions: Genomics and Computational Biology, Molecular Genetics and Development, Molecular Cell Biology, and Chemical and Structural Biology. It has around 400 research staff and research students with an annual budget in the order of $35m. The major focus of IMB's research is to understand the information contained in the genes and proteins of mammals and thereby to improve human and animal health through the development of new pharmaceuticals, cell therapies and diagnostics.

The Role: As Research Officer/Senior Research Officer you will work jointly between the two Centres to provide bioinformatics support to scientists at the CICR and to support collaborative initiatives and technologies common to the CICR and IMB.

The Person: You should possess a PhD in biology or a relevant area of computer science or applied mathematics. You should also have strong computer programming and database development skills, a track record in computationally-based research, a knowledge of mammalian molecular biology and familiarity with publicly-accessible databases of information relevant to molecular biology and genomics.

Remuneration: This is a full-time, fixed term appointment for 12 months which may be renewed subject to the availability of further funding. The remuneration package will be in the range of $52,200 to $70,806 per annum (Research Officer, Level A), or $74,533 to $88,508 per annum (Senior Research Officer, Level B), which includes employer superannuation contributions of 17%.
