Bioinformatics Support Officer
Peter Wills Bioinformatics Centre
The Garvan Institute of Medical Research was founded in
1963. Initially a research department of St Vincent's
Hospital in Sydney, it is now one of Australia's largest
medical research institutions with approximately 400
scientists, students and support staff. Garvan's main
research programs are: Cancer, Diabetes & Obesity,
Immunology & Inflammation, Osteoporosis, and Neuroscience.
The Peter Wills Bioinformatics Centre (PWBC) at the Garvan
Institute of Medical Research was established in August
2001 with a grant from the Federal Government's
Biotechnology Centre of Excellence Program. The PWBC
provides service and collaborates with researchers at the
Garvan Institute and elsewhere in a wide range of
bioinformatics areas including analysis and housing of
microarray data, structural bioinformatics and clinical
data management.
This position will assist in supporting the service and
research activities of the PWBC.
Applicants should have a postgraduate bioinformatics or
related degree with two years work experience. Strong
programming skills in Python and R are required and
experience in SQL and Java are an advantage. The
successful applicant will have excellent inter-personal
skills, a keen interest in biology as well as experience
in the GeneSpring and Partek microarray tools.
