Research Data Manager

The Cancer Council Victoria

The Cancer Council Victoria (an independent charity) is seeking an experienced Research Data Manager to coordinate and maintain databases for the Centre for Behavioural Research in Cancer (CBRC).

The Research Data Manager will be responsible for developing and managing data systems to process data generated from CBRC research projects. This will involve developing and implementing standardised procedures for data processing (including data capture, data entry and data cleaning) and extraction and long-term electronic data storage and will ensure quality control of data processing. The Research Data Manager will assist in the acquisition of suitable software for multi-modal data collection and management (including paper based questionnaires, online surveys, telephone interviewing, hand-held devices) and involved with training and supervising data entry personnel. Datasets to manage include the Australian Secondary Students Alcohol and Drug surveys; Victorian Sun Observation studies; Victorian (and National) Sun Protection Survey; Victorian Population Smoking and Health surveys; Victorian Cancer Issues Population Survey. Data is also generated from research and evaluation projects including those funded by external sources such as NHMRC or VicHealth, and those developed in collaboration with other units of The Cancer Council Victoria, such as the Cancer Education Unit; Cancer Information Support Service; Cancer Epidemiology Centre; Community Relations & Fundraising Unit.

With guidance from the Research Projects Manager, the position is responsible for datasets that contribute to the first class standard of behavioural science research achieved by CBRC and has the potential to impact on all research staff.

This position will suit a motivated individual with a Bachelor degree in a relevant discipline (eg. Information Technology or Applied Statistics major), practical experience establishing and managing database systems ideally for research projects, and knowledge of basic statistical analyses. The position requires a sound understanding of diverse methods of data collection, the ability to implement appropriate systems to ensure data integrity as well as high level database and computing skills. Maturity, excellent organisational and communication skills, and a willingness to learn are important pre-requisites.

CBRC has an active program of behavioural research in cancer control, especially tobacco control, skin cancer prevention, obesity prevention and control, and supportive care for patients with cancer. CBRC conducts evaluation of cancer prevention, screening and supportive care programs and services housed within The Cancer Council Victoria. These include high profile public communication programs such as Quit, SunSmart, and PapScreen Victoria. CBRC also provides research and evaluation capacity to assist The Cancer Council Victoria to implement and assess the outcomes of other selected programs and services. This is a full-time position with Total Equivalent Package Value of $54,356-$70,000 pa commensurate with qualifications and experience (includes base salary, annual leave loading, superannuation and maximum additional pre-tax benefit of salary packaging).
