Research Bioinformaticians (2-3 positions)
UWA Centre for Child Health Research
BIOINFORMATICS PROGRAM
The UWA Centre for Child Health Research, located at the
Telethon
Institute for Child Health Research (TICHR) in Perth, WA,
is looking for
up to three scientists with varying levels of experience
and research
background to help develop its Bioinformatics Program.
Successful
appointees will collaborate closely with biomedical
researchers who use
technologies such as microarray analysis to identify novel
pathways
associated with disease causation and susceptibility, and
to define
targets for disease treatment and prevention. Current
clinical areas of
research address leukaemia, other cancers, asthma,
allergy, and
infectious diseases, while methodological research areas
include genetic
statistics, causal pathway modeling, spatial analysis, and
data linkage
analysis within complex datasets.
Applicants should have a degree, preferably post-graduate,
in either:
1. Biology, genetics, molecular biology, or other related
areas,
together with computational or statistical expertise and
interest, or
2. Statistics, mathematics, computer science, engineering,
biostatistics, or other related areas, together with
biological
expertise and interest.
Appointees will be involved in cross-disciplinary teams
applying new
methods to address important medical research problems,
and should thus
have an interest in both biology and biostatistics or
computing. We are
particularly interested in people with experience in
developing
computing and statistical methodology and algorithms, and
using/testing
existing biological and bioinformatics software.
TICHR has strong collaborations with many scientists in
medical biology
and is supported by an excellent IT department. It is also
a
collaborator in the NHMRC funded Australian Medical
Bioinformatics
Resource (AMBeR) a national initiative to improve
Bioinformatics
capacity in Australia.
These jobs will be stimulating entry points for
statistically trained
graduates/postgraduates into the world of bioinformatics
and molecular
biology, or for biologically trained
graduates/post-graduates into
biostatistics and bioinformatics. The appointments will be
for up to 5
years in the first instance.
Salary Ranges: Research Assistant : $38,146-$51,685
Research Officer: $48,149-$58,485
Research Fellow: $60,526-$64,608;
Senior Research Fellow $66,646-$76,850;
Principal Research Fellow $80,247-$88,408.
Superannuation at 17% and salary packaging benefits
($16,050 pa tax
free) are also available. The level of appointment within
the above
ranges will be negotiable and depend on qualifications,
experience, and
relative performance against the appointment criteria.
