Applications are sought for a Research Associate to take a leading role in a research project that aims to develop innovative statistical theory and methods in Bayesian computation, and apply those methods to applications in climate extremes.

As an integral part of a research team, the successful candidate will:

  • Take a leading role in the theoretical development of novel Bayesian methods in at least one of the following areas: Adaptive Markov chain Monte Carlo, Sequential Monte Carlo, slice sampling, perfect simulation.
  • Develop efficient algorithms to implement the methods developed.
  • Apply Bayesian methods to applications in climate extremes.
  • Prepare research papers for publication in internationally peer-reviewed journals.
  • Give oral reports and presentations of the research in seminars and conferences.

    This position is funded by an ARC Discovery Project at the School of Mathematics and Statistics, UNSW, and supervised by Dr. S. A. Sisson and Dr. Y. Fan. The School of Mathematics and Statistics at UNSW is located in the Faculty of Science and is recognised nationally and internationally for its excellence in research and teaching. It is a leading Australian school on quality measures such as research publications and competitive grant funding. It has well equipped research and teaching facilities and offers a comprehensive range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs that attract outstanding students from Australia and overseas.

    Dr. Sisson is an Adjunct Research Fellow at the UNSW Climate Change Research Centre (CCRC). The CCRC is a new initiative at UNSW supported by strategic priorities funding focused on climate change science. The Centre possesses world-class expertise in the dynamics of the global climate system with a focus on Australian regional climate extremes and change.

    Salary range for Research Associate is A$62,347 - A$66,686 per year (plus 17% employer superannuation plus leave loading)

    This is a 2-3 year fixed term, full time position. The period of appointment will be negotiated with the successful candidate. Start date is also negotiable although ideally between January -July 2008.
