Two Graduate Positions

CSIRO

The Terrestrial Mapping & Monitoring Research Group conducts mathematical and statistical research and consulting to enhance the management of Australia's natural and built environment at national, regional and local levels. We are seeking to appoint TWO experimental scientists to positions in our Perth office.

The successful candidates will gain experience in the application of statistical and mathematical methods to remotely sensed data to develop and implement quantitative land-cover monitoring technologies, and be part of a team delivering solutions to natural resource and environmental management agencies. Graduates willing to undertake further study are encouraged to apply.

Position Description
  • Testing and implementing methods for the analysis of spatial and temporal data.
  • Becoming proficient with technical aspects of application projects.
  • Facilitating technology transfer to appropriate agencies through specifying and implementing operational methodologies.
  • Development of parallel algorithms on cluster computers and the maintenance of existing codes.
  • Contributing to the development of new environmental measurement and assessment projects.
  • Contributing to the scientific research of the Group.
  • Communicating research results through scientific publications, conferences and other means.
  • Other duties as directed.

    Selection Criteria

    Pre Requisite
    1. University Degree (BSc, BEng) in statistics, mathematics, engineering or physics

    Essential
    2. The ability to implement and test new methods
    3. The ability to work in a team
    4. Ability to write code in C/C++
    5. Outcome focused

    Desirable
    6. Familiarity with modern classification and regression techniques
    7. Experience with C/C++ code development on cluster hardware utilising MPI
    8. Knowledge of image processing concepts
    9. Familiarity with statistical packages such as R or Splus
    10. Familiarity with image processing packages
