Research Masters Scholarship

A one-year scholarship valued at A$25,000 tax-free is available for a course of research leading to the degree of Master of Applied Science (Research) (course code SC80: see http://www.studyfinder.qut.edu.au/). Australian citizens or residents, or New Zealand citizens, may normally enrol fee-free. Applicants of other nationality are welcome to apply, but will be personally liable for tuition fees (currently A$11,184 per semester, subject to review). The stipend is limited strictly to one year, although candidates wishing to articulate to doctoral studies may be eligible to apply for further competitively-funded scholarships.

The scholarship is funded by an Australian Research Council Discovery Project on weather derivatives. Any topic relating to statistical or mathematical models for weather, or weather-related finance, is negotiable. The project is lead by Professor Rodney Wolff, who will supervise the successful applicant.

Applicants should have, or expect to have by 1 March 2008, a strong four-year degree, or course-work masters degree, or equivalent, in mathematics, statistics, engineering, finance, econometrics, or other strongly quantitative discipline. Applicants should have a Grade Point Average of at least 5 out of 7 (on the Australian scale) calculated on their quantitative subjects.

Applications should comprise a brief CV and a list of subjects studied with grades, along with a statement of interest in the proposed field of study. Official transcripts are not required at this time, but will be necessary to confirm the successful applicant's enrolment, which must be on a full-time basis and commencing no later than 1 March 2008. Queensland University of Technology reserves the right to fill the position by invitation, to continue searching beyond the closing date, or not to make an appointment.
