Applications are invited for Postgraduate Scholarship in the research
area "Quantitative Genomics and Systems Biology", a three year
postgraduate appointment co-hosted by Dr Haja Kadarmideen of CSIRO
Livestock Industries and Prof Julius van der Werf of the School of Rural
Science and Agriculture, University of New England.
Candidate must have (or expect to have) Australian citizenship or
Permanent Residency. A high quality Honours or Masters degree or similar
in the field of Animal/Plant Breeding or Statistics or Genetics or
Computational Biology or Bioinformatics or closely related field is
essential. Full and Top-up Scholarships are available to doctoral
students who gain or expect to gain an Australian Postgraduate Award
(APA) or equivalent university award or scholarship in 2008.
Position Description
We would like to appoint a Postgraduate Scholar to a project to examine
various statistical and computational methods to analyse high throughput
genomics data and to estimate association between DNA markers and
quantitative traits in animals. The efforts in sequencing the human /
bovine genome have resulted in the detection of many thousands of
genetic markers that are single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP).
Availability of SNP Chips and whole genome-wide association tests mark
the revolutions in gene discovery for many complex traits. This project
has a focus on beef cattle and sheep. Computer simulations may be used,
with the possibility to use SNP Chip data from Beef cattle and Sheep
whole genome scan experiments.
The position is located at the CSIRO Livestock Industries JM Rendel
Laboratory in Rockhampton and within the Quantitative Genomics and
Systems Biology Group. The student will be enrolled at the University of
New England for the award of the doctoral degree. The student will also
be working closely with the Animal Breeding and Genetics Group at
University of New England.
The Scholarship will provide you with the opportunity to work with
people who are leaders in their field, a stipend and financial support
towards necessary travel and operating costs of your project and
attendance at one international conference and associated laboratory
visits.
