The School of Computing and Mathematics is located in the city of Wagga Wagga on the Murrumbidgee River. The School offers undergraduate and graduate programs in mathematics, statistics & computing. In addition, the school provides a statistical consultancy service to the wider academic community through the Quantitative Consulting Unit (QCU). Academics within the School are actively involved in a variety of research programs such as nonlinear waves, differential & integral equations, gravitational waves, relativity, curvature measures in functionless models, spatial science, image processing, wireless communication, networking security, telecommunication, data mining, information technology and ethics, and educational technology. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to participate in research projects, to conduct consultancies or to supervise graduate students via the Quantitative Consulting Unit within the School.
General Expectations
Academics at Charles Sturt University are expected to meet required standards in teaching, and research or professional activities in administration and the wider community. A willingness to embrace new technologies is also required. International travel may be required. At Senior Lecturer level, leadership ability is essential.
Responsibilities
The successful applicant will be expected to teach statistics subjects to on-campus and distance education students (on and offshore) at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The School is particularly seeking teaching expertise in applied statistics and a high level of experience in statistical consulting. The successful appointee will be expected to take an active role in the provision of statistical consultancy services within the Quantitative Consulting Unit (QCU). In addition, the appointee will conduct research, undertake academic administrative duties that may include responsibility for course coordination and will assess and moderate partner programs. Moreover, depending on qualifications, incumbents will supervise research students. Active involvement in professional activities and cross-disciplinary initiatives are encouraged. At Senior Lecturer level, the appointee will be expected to actively contribute to the leadership of research, consultancy, scholarship, teaching and learning and professional engagement within the School.
The appointee is expected to:
take an active role in the provision of statistical consultancy services.
teach statistics subjects and take an active role in the development of the school’s academic programs.
identify and develop research initiatives and opportunities both individually and as part of a team.
be involved in professional activities and administration appropriate to the level of appointment.
Essential Criteria
Demonstrated ability and experience in statistical consulting.
Ability to demonstrate successful teaching/lecturing in the statistics discipline or evidence of teaching potential.
Familiarity with a wide range of quantitative & qualitative statistical analysis techniques particularly those applicable to problems in the environmental, agricultural & health science disciplines.
Demonstrated leadership, management and administrative ability ( for appointment as Senior Lecturer).
A relevant doctoral qualification (or near completion) for appointment as lecturer. A doctoral qualification and a publication track record for appointment as Senior Lecturer.
A demonstrated capacity to supervise doctoral students (for appointment as Senior Lecturer) or supervisory potential.
Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
Effective interpersonal skills and capacity to work effectively with other academics and administrative staff.
Ability to work with minimal supervision and as part of a cooperative team.
Desirable Criteria
Familiarity with distance education and online delivery.
A record of research and publication in refereed conferences and journals.
Additional qualitative statistical skills in the management, education & social science disciplines would also be highly regarded.
Demonstrated ability to promote high quality in course and/or subject delivery and development.
The ability to contribute to the wider mathematics and statistics teaching programs within the School.
Eligibility for membership of the SSAI.
An interest in developing the use of new technologies and approaches to teaching and learning.
Salary range:
Level B - Lecturer: $67,871 - $80,599 per annum
Level C - Senior Lecturer: $83,140 - $95,868 per annum
