The University of Sydney's Northern Rivers University Department of Rural Health (NRUDRH) was established in 2001 in collaboration with the Southern Cross University. It has quickly become a world-renowned prestigious multidisciplinary centre known for its innovations in health education, research and region-specific service development. The NRUDRH is a member of the Australian Rural Health Research Collaboration (ARHRC), an initiative which brings together institutions of rural and mental health with common goals under a three-year infrastructure capacity building grant from NSW Health. The ARHRC also has links with the Centre for Epidemiology & Research NSW Health.

In association with the ARHRC, the NRUDRH is seeking a Biostatistician/Statistician to provide high level biostatistical advice, training and research as part of a team of proactive and talented epidemiologists. Based primarily in Lismore, the appointee will enjoy flexible hours and days, as well as the opportunity to build valuable skills and make a significant contribution to the field of Rural Health. This appointment will include travel to Moree, Broken Hill, Orange and Sydney.

Harnessing well-developed analytical skills and strong project management abilities, the appointee will conduct statistical analysis of epidemiological data, support the biostatistical requirements of researchers and contribute to the study design and data set construction. Futhermore, the appointee will develop integrated database management protocols, contribute to funding applications and assist in the development of a regionally based team of researchers.

The responsibilities of this role will also extend to supervising and training undergraduate and postgraduate students, documenting all stages of data management and analysis, and contributing to published papers. Subsequently, a strong attention to detail, high-level oral and written communication skills and prior experience with formal and informal teaching and evaluation will be required.

The successful candidate will hold a relevant undergraduate degree and postgraduate training in the relevant discipline, or have an equivalent accreditation or standing. Strong skills with word processors, spreadsheets, databases and advanced statistical software will be essential, as will a demonstrated ability of preparing funding submissions and leading multidisciplinary teams of researchers. Analytical skills relevant to the design, implementation and reporting of epidemiological-based research will be required.

The position is part-time or full-time fixed term until June 2009, subject to the completion of a satisfactory probation period for new appointees. The proportion of full-time will be negotiated with a minimum of 0.8 FTE. This position may be continued, subject to funding and need. Membership of a University approved superannuation scheme is a condition of employment for new appointees.

Remuneration package Lecturer Level B: up to $86,731 - $102,993 p.a. pro rata (which includes a base salary $73,289 - $87,030 p.a., leave loading and up to 17% employer’s contribution to superannuation).

Remuneration package Senior Lecturer Level C: up to $106,243 - $122,395 p.a. pro rata (which includes a base salary $89,777 - $103,519 p.a., leave loading and up to 17% employer’s contribution to superannuation).

Level of appointment and responsibility will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
