Cutting-edge statistical methodology for spatial modelling of galaxies in huge catalogues
CSIRO is Australia's largest scientific research agency, delivering outcomes of benefit to the Australian economy, society and environment through excellence in science and technology. We seek an enthusiastic and talented postdoc to play a role in our research at the interface of spatial statistics and radio astronomy, in collaboration with the Australia Telescope National Facility, the University of Western Australia and the Valencia Observatory. This postdoc position aims to develop new, cutting-edge statistical methodology for recognising distant galaxies in radio astronomy images, and for analysing the spatial distribution of galaxies in huge catalogues (> 106 galaxy locations). Classical methods of spatial statistics for point patterns must be modified to deal with large data volumes, complex spatial patterns, and uncertainty in recognising galaxies. The project will be supervised by Professor Adrian Baddeley of the University of Western Australia, a leading expert in spatial statistics. The postdoctoral fellow will have access to an excellent research environment including advanced software and computing infrastructure, high quality data and a breadth of scientific expertise. Research outcomes include rigorous definition of the statistical methodology in prominent publications, practical implementation including software, and detailed examples demonstrating the analysis of galaxy survey catalogues.
