Biostatisticians

NHMRC Clinical Trials Centre

Biostatisticians (HEO Level 6-8)
NHMRC Clinical Trials Centre
Reference No. 146707

Biostatistics at the NHMRC Clinical Trials Centre (CTC).

The Clinical Trials Centre currently has appointments available for highly-motivated Biostatisticians at varying stages of their careers to work on a range of clinical trials that investigate significant diseases within the community.

Biostatistics at the CTC encompasses a wide variety of skills. A biostatistician at the CTC will advise on study design and the conduct and interpretation of statistical analyses. A statistician will work as part of a multidisciplinary team including data managers, clinical investigators and other scientists in areas that include oncology, cardiovascular research and neonatology. The challenges include the communication of methods and results (verbally and written) within this team. The environment at the CTC helps develop problem solving and strategic thinking skills particularly in the areas of interim analyses, statistical monitoring, clinical study designs and sample size determinations.

Statisticians play a critical role in the development of the scientific principles underpinning clinical studies. This involves liaising with clinicians, epidemiologists and statistical colleagues to develop efficient study designs and to help resolve difficult statistical issues. Statisticians are an integral part of study conduct, with involvement in designing and performing randomisation strategies, data management (recruitment strategies) and statistical analyses. Interpretation of study results by investigators are made in close consultation with study statisticians. Opportunities for development of novel clinical trials methodologies are encouraged, as well as participation in the delivery of educational courses and graduate teaching.

The CTC has statistical roles which match a range of statistical abilities and lack of biostatistical experience should not deter application. These appointments present an outstanding opportunity to work alongside renowned scientists and academics in a dynamic environment that is dedicated to your professional development. A degree in statistics is essential. Level and classification of appointment and responsibility will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate experience or potential in using standard statistical packages. Additionally, the ability to work through problems systematically and cooperatively with colleagues and implement agreed solutions is essential. Practical experience in biostatistics is desirable.

Appointments can be made at either general or academic level, depending on your qualifications and experience and potential for career progression.

These roles are full-time fixed term for 12 months, subject to the completion of a satisfactory probation period for new appointees. Part-time roles can also be negotiated based on individual circumstances. Further offers of ongoing employment may be available, subject to funding and need.
