Statistics Jobs in Australia: 2005 January - March

Adele Watson, 15 February 2005

Sydney

Senior Biostatistician

A Sydney-based (Balmain) health care consultancy requires an independent thinking biostatistician to perform a variety of mathematical and statistical tasks for our projects undertaken for government, academic, clinical and industry clients. The role involves designing, undertaking and reporting statistical analyses, including but not limited to descriptive and comparative statistics, linear regression analyses, generalised linear models, analysis of longitudinal data, survival analysis, and meta-analysis, including both frequentist and Bayesian approaches. In addition, you must be confident critiquing statistical analyses undertaken by others. We require an experienced statistician who will have responsibility for the validity, quality and accuracy of the statistical work undertaken within our consultancy. You must be able to take an innovative but defensible approach to problems arising from imperfect and complex datasets, and from non-standard analyses.

Therefore, it is essential that you have an in-depth knowledge of underlying statistical theory as well as experience applying your knowledge - preferably in the health care field.

The ability to work in a team is critical. An essential component of the role is liaising with internal clinical data analysts and health economists, and determining where you can 'add value' to our existing analyses.

Excellent verbal and written English skills are essential, as from time to time the role requires communication with our government, academic, medical and industry clients.

The following qualifications are preferred:

You should have substantial experience in the use of one or more of the statistical packages STATA, SPSS or SAS (including the DATA step and SAS/STAT). A working knowledge of the remaining packages would be an advantage. Experience in writing macros in a statistical language is essential.

It is intended that the role will be permanent part-time (~3 days per week), subject to an initial probationary period. There may be potential for partially home-based work for the right candidate.

An attractive remuneration package is available, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
