Middlemore Hospital
Auckland

Statistician

Many staff at Middlemore Hospital undertake research in a variety of forms, e.g. commercial clinical trials, investigator-led trials and clinical audit studies. While some staff are well educated in protocol design and statistics the majority are not and need assistance to ensure their projects are robust.

There are no biostatisticians on the staff of the Counties Manukau District Health Board. Therefore, this advice is sought outside the organisation, usually on a per project basis. However, many staff do not know where to find such assistance.

For the last 2 months the Centre for Clinical Research and Effective Practice (CCRep) has operated a Statistics Clinic on the Middlemore Site. It consists of a half day in which eight 30-minute appointments are available for staff to discuss their project/issue with the attending biostatistician. This time is free of charge to the researcher while the biostatistician is paid an honorarium for their time.

Additional assistance (outside the 30-minute appointment) can be arranged between the researcher and biostatistician and this then becomes a consulting relationship to be managed in the usual way through the biostatistician's employer/agent.

CCRep is seeking to expand the number of biostatisticians available to run this service to ensure that clinics can be held on a regular monthly basis. We would welcome any expressions of interest from biostatisticians in the Auckland area who feel they are qualified to provide this service.
