The University of Sydney has a vast breadth of expertise in bioinformatics covering the disciplines of agriculture, biochemistry, biology, genetics, information technology, mathematics, medicine, statistics, and veterinary science.

Right now, Sydney Bioinformatics, a new Centre of the University of Sydney, is seeking a proactive and results-driven Bioinformatics Project Officer to support service-based bioinformatics projects in collaboration with life science researchers at the Westmead Millennium Institute.

Located at the Westmead Millennium Institute, but acting as part of a project team within Sydney Bioinformatics, you will oversee the completion of diverse projects including consultation, advice, data analysis, and custom software development. In this role you can look forward to using a range of methods that may require researching new techniques to complete bioinformatics projects for clients. Highly organised and attentive to detail, you will be tasked with maintaining accurate project management records and documentation.

A confident communicator with well-honed written and presentation skills, you will contribute to the preparation of scientific manuscripts and presentations based on completed project work. Due to the nature of this role, it is imperative you are an innovative thinker who has a strong customer service ethos, and a willingness to learn new skills and embrace novel ideas.

To succeed, you will be degree-qualified in Bioinformatics, or have equivalent qualifications. Strong programming and software development skills in PERL, Python, C++, R, or Java will be essential, as will solid general IT skills and experience, and a familiarity with Linux/Unix environments. Well-developed biological knowledge will be paramount to communicate effectively with life science researchers and find unique solutions to the presented problems.

This position is full-time fixed term until December 2008, subject to the completion of a satisfactory probation period for new appointees.
