The Garvan Institute is one of Australia’s leading medical research institutions with approximately 400 scientists, students and support staff working in research programs in Cancer, Diabetes & Obesity, Immunology & Inflammation, Osteoporosis, Neuroscience and Pituitary Disease.

We are seeking a Bioinformatics Research Assistant / Research Officer to assist in the analysis of large-scale epigenomic data as well as in the development of tools to aid data analysis. The position(s) would suit a B.Sc., M.Sc. or phD graduate from a quantitative discipline (statistics, bioinformatics, mathematics, physics, computer science) who is looking to gain relevant research experience.

Responsibilities/requirements will include:
  • Creating analysis pipelines for the processing of genome-scale data
  • Keep abreast of the current state-of-the-art for genomic data analysis
  • Plotting and interpreting experimental data
  • Gathering data from online resources to address relevant biological questions

    Demonstrated knowledge of basic statistical concepts and programming experience will be highly regarded. Some knowledge of basic molecular biology would be desirable and knowledge of any of R, MATLAB, Perl, python or HTML would be an asset.

    The position holder must be responsive to requests, be enthusiastic, have scientific integrity, diligent, hardworking and must show a positive attitude at all times. Good time management and interpersonal skills, initiative in completing tasks with a high degree of precision and efficiency are also required.
