Statistics Jobs in Australia:
2009 April - June
Bioinformatics Australia mailing list, 18 June 2009
Posdoctoral Fellowship in Phylogenomics
CSIRO
An exciting opportunity to participate in the Cotton
Bollworm Genome Project has arisen at CSIRO Entomology,
Canberra, ACT, Australia.
CSIRO is Australia’s leading research organization with
over 6,500 staff located across the country. Its aim is to
deliver great science and innovative solutions for
industry, society and the environment by igniting the
creative spirit of its staff. Much of the Life
Sciences-oriented research carried out at CSIRO involves
using bioinformatics tools to study genomic data, and as
these tools become more sophisticated, so do the
scientific questions that are being addressed.
The appointee will be an early career scientist with (i)
good knowledge in genome bioinformatics, phylogenetics and
related areas of statistics and computing science; (ii)
excellent communication, personal, and inter-personal
skills; and (iii) a documented record of publishing papers
in international, peer-reviewed journals. Familiarity with
bioinformatics tools used in genome-wide comparisons of
genomic and proteomic data as well as scripting or
programming is also desirable. You will be responsible for
assembling and comparing data from a wide range of
species. In examining these data, there is an opportunity
to use CSIRO’s excellent high-performance IT resources.
Having analysed your data, you will have the opportunity
to relate your discoveries to species-specific
life-history traits from the insects compared (e.g., diet,
insecticide resistance, etc.). You will be expected to be
strongly self-motivated and able to work collaboratively
as well as independently on a variety of projects; hence,
being able to multitask is highly desirable.
