Bioinformatics Officer

Murdoch Childrens Research Institute

The Murdoch Childrens Research Institute (MCRI), based at the Royal Children's Hospital (RCH) in Melbourne, is the largest child health research organisation in Australia. The ultimate goal is that the Institute becomes one of the top-five child health research institutes in the world through the conduct of globally competitive research capitalising on strengths across the disciplines of laboratory, clinical and public health research. Extending from this objective, MCRI also aims to drive enterprise, initiative and cross-disciplinary interaction, by developing clinical research on the Royal Children’s Hospital Campus.

The Institute is seeking a bioinformatician to extend the current capacity of its Bioinformatics Unit. The successful applicant will be responsible for providing bioinformatic expertise and support for a range of projects within the MCRI. One significant project for the successful applicant will be with the MCRI Epigenetics group, analysing the genomic methylation pattern in a childhood Leukaemia cohort. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to the Institute’s interdisciplinary research programs.

Applicants must have tertiary-level qualifications in a relevant discipline, such as bioinformatics, biology, biostatistics, and a relevant medical-related or bioinformatics Masters/ PhD is desirable. Knowledge and experience of microarray design/analysis or DNA sequence analysis is essential, as is demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team. Statistical programming language R skills, statistical qualifications, database expertise, python or perl skills and experience in the analysis of bioinformatics data ideally in a biomedical research environment would be a distinct advantage, as would an aptitude for the training of researchers, including students.

This is a one year position with the possibility of extension. Part time applicants will be considered. Great working conditions, including competitive salary rate and salary packaging options available.
