Innovative Analytic Techniques to Address Health Priorities

The Health Services and Outcomes Research Group invites applications from highly motivated graduates to undertake a doctoral project in 2010.

The Group conducts world class population-based research on health services and the factors that determine their use, costs and outcomes. It has a specific focus on using large, linked data sets and cohort studies, and on applying innovative analytic techniques (including multi-level modelling and data mining). The Group addresses health priorities including chronic disease, obesity, mental health, Aboriginal health, early life and ageing. It works in close collaboration with policymakers and with national and international research leaders in the fields of health record linkage, cohort studies and biostatistics.

The Group is primarily located in the School of Medicine but has members in the School of Computing and Mathematics. The successful applicant will be based at the UWS Campbelltown campus (5 minutes walk from Macarthur Station), where a purpose built state-of-the art medical education and research facility is available.

Scholarships are available for two projects. The first scholarship will be awarded to a candidate whose proposed project best aligns with the research interests of the Group (as broadly outlined above). The second scholarship will be awarded to a candidate whose proposed project has a specific emphasis on using linked data for research to evaluate and improve health services for mothers, babies and children and will be part of an NHMRC project.

Criteria
  • the scholarships are open to graduates from a variety of backgrounds including medicine, nursing and allied health fields, public health, psychology, science, mathematics, statistics and computer science
  • Bachelor Honours degree (Class I or II), or equivalent qualifications and/or experience (eg coursework masters degree with a significant research component)

    What does each scholarship provide?
  • tax-free stipend of $32,500 per annum
  • domestic applicants will be awarded a funded place in the degree. International applicants will be charged tuition fees
  • support is available for conference attendance and fieldwork costs (both in Australia and overseas)
