KEY PURPOSE
The Lecturer in Critical Care Medicine will facilitate teaching, contribute to research, research development and supervision of higher degree students and advanced trainees. An in-depth understanding of statistical methodologies and the use of statistical application software packages is desirable.

ORGANISATIONAL ENVIRONMENT
The Faculty of Health Sciences is comprised of two Schools: the School of Medicine offering a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses and research programs in medicine (graduate entry only), as well as in a range of health professional and medical and health science disciplines such as speech pathology and audiology, public health, biotechnology, environmental health and nutrition and dietetics; and the School of Nursing and Midwifery with undergraduate and postgraduate courses and research programs in nursing and midwifery.

The School of Medicine has realigned its thirty-six Departments into five inter-disciplinary Clusters. Each cluster has a mandate to:
  • Improve its public profile and increase marketability
  • Increase interdisciplinary cooperation
  • Build a clearer, stronger, more strategic research profile
  • Develop courses that are more attractive to students
  • Increase the resource base, enable more effective use of resources and increase flexibility

    The School of Medicine is closely integrated with Flinders Medical Centre, Repatriation General Hospital, Noarlunga Hospital and Southern Adelaide Health Service, and all senior clinical staff have conjoint appointments. Flinders Medical Centre is a 450 bed teaching hospital serving the southern region of Adelaide. It covers all major medical specialities and provides several community outreach services. Repatriation General Hospital is a 220 teaching hospital serving the inner southern and veteran communities of Adelaide, and in Respiratory Medicine is closely integrated with Flinders Medical Centre. Noarlunga Hospital is a 108 bed regional community teaching hospital with a strong primary-secondary interface. Critical Care Medicine has a well developed teaching program for both medical students and intensive care trainees and has an exemplary record of attracting and supervising PhD candidates both nationally and internationally.

    Critical Care Medicine also has strong research interests and facilities, particularly in relation to acute respiratory failure, ventilatory support, and heart failure which have been supported by various funding bodies including NH&MRC.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

    1. Research
  • Conducting research in an agreed area of interest in Critical Care Medicine.
  • Contribute to grant applications and manuscript submissions.
  • Epidemiological and statistical analysis of clinically orientated research.
  • Assist and develop current clinical staff interested in research.

    2. Teaching
  • Planning, coordinating and conducting teaching activities in Internal Medicine in the Graduate Entry Medical Program, including participation as a tutor and case-writer in problem-based learning, student assessments and program evaluation. Active participation in the coordination and administration of the Graduate Entry Medical Program will be expected.
  • Designing and subjecting to a continuous improvement cycle a whole-of-course curriculum in intensive care medicine in the Graduate Entry Medical Program.
  • Develop a series of sessions outlining clinical study design, presentation and analysis for intensive care trainees.
  • Student teaching in a subspecialty of internal medicine in the Graduate Entry Medical Program, in any of the sites in which Flinders University is active.
  • Providing academic advice and counseling to students and trainees.
  • Assist and supervise higher degree students including intensive care trainee research as either a primary supervisor or additional supervisor of current and new projects.

    3. Other
  • Undertaking other duties as determined by the Head of Critical Care Medicine and the Dean of the School of Medicine or their representatives.

    SUPERVISION PROVIDED TO OTHERS
    This position has no supervisory responsibilities for either general or academic staff.

    WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
    The appointee will be responsible to the Dean, School of Medicine, through the Associate Dean, Clinical Effectiveness cluster and the Head of Critical Care Medicine.

    The appointee will work closely with the Head of Critical Care Medicine to ensure teaching and research activities are appropriately balanced.

    SELECTION CRITERIA

    Essential criteria
    1. Progress towards a higher degree OR extensive relevant professional experience and recognised professional standing in a medical or health sciences field.
    2. Demonstrated experience in conducting research and analysis of clinically orientated research.
    3. Demonstrated experience in educational leadership and in medical student and postgraduate teaching and the ability to coordinate and develop teaching programs.
    4. A biological science background, preferably in Health Sciences.
    5. Demonstrated ability to independently write at a level suitable for publication.
    6. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and ability to collaborate with others.
    7. Experience in epidemiology and/or statistical analysis.

    Desirable criteria
    1. Higher research degree (M.D., Ph.D or equivalent).
    2. Demonstrated significant level of independent research activity including peer-reviewed publications, competitive grant funding and research student supervision.
    3. An in-depth understanding of statistical methodologies and the use of statistical application software packages is desirable.
