Do you have a genuine interest in the social or economic well-being of New Zealanders?

The Social and Population Statistics Group at Statistics New Zealand is looking for statistical analysts to work in its two key subject matter business units:

Social Statistics
Produces and analyses social statistics on a range of topics, develops information for policy and research in the field of social well-being, and produces indicators for service monitoring and development. The Unit conducts a number of major surveys, including the General Social Survey (GSS), Time Use Survey (TUS), Maori Social Survey and Disability Survey. Its analyses and reports also draw on administrative data, particularly in the fields of family, injury and justice statistics.

Standard of Living
Provides reliable, timely and relevant statistics about household's and individual's income, expenditure, wealth, housing and other measures of standard of living. The unit conducts a number of major surveys, including the longitudinal Survey of Family Income and Employment (SoFIE), the Household Economic Survey (HES), the New Zealand Income Survey (NZIS) and the Net Worth Survey.

As an analyst in the Social and Population Statistics Group you will be part of a dynamic, supportive team that is involved in a variety of interesting work including:

  • assisting with the development of new and existing surveys and outputs
  • data analysis and output, drawing on administrative, as well as survey data
  • exploring new data sources for their potential to meet information needs
  • liaison with key customers and stakeholders both inside and outside Statistics New Zealand
  • regular reviews of outputs to ensure they continue to meet needs
  • providing subject matter advice.

    You will have:

  • energy, drive and a genuine interest in, and knowledge of, one of the three subject matter areas (ie: Social Statistics or Standard of Living Statistics)
  • experience of using survey and/or social sector administrative data
  • well developed communication and interpersonal skills
  • an ability to work collaboratively in a team environment, and across teams where necessary
  • experience in extracting, manipulating and interpreting data, and a passion for turning numbers into meaningful stories
  • an ability to use tools such as SAS or SQL would be an advantage.
