APA(I) ARC Linkage Project - Pathways, Policies and Prevention

An Australian Research Council Australian Postgraduate Award (Industry) scholarship is available for a motivated PhD candidate who is interested in pursuing research as part of a team working on projects around child health and human developmental pathways, based at the Telethon Institute for Child Health Research. The successful candidate will be required to undertake a PhD under the guidance of one or more Chief Investigators on the Developmental Pathways Project, in areas such as social determinants of health, child abuse and neglect, educational outcomes, mental and physical health, juvenile delinquency. They will be able to work both independently and within a multi-disciplinary team. Work will be focussed primarily around data from the Developmental Pathways Project, a partnership that enables linkage of data from Western Australian Government Departments including Health, Education, Child Protection, Disabilities, Housing, Corrective Services, and Attorney General.

The value of this scholarship is AU$27,651 (per annum, tax exempt), paid fortnightly.

Essential Selection Criteria:
Honours degree in a relevant discipline; background knowledge of relevant areas, such as, medical sociology/anthropology, developmental health, social epidemiology, population health, criminology; knowledge of quantitative and qualitative data analysis; excellent communication skills; excellent academic record; ability to work in a team environment. Successful recipients of the APAI scholarships will have to qualify to enrol in a PhD at the University of Western Australia. Successful candidates without a strong quantitative research background will be required to apply for enrolment in biostatistics and epidemiology units at UWA.

Desirable criteria:
Familiarity with child health and wellbeing issues; the ability to analyse population linked data.
