The Australian Institute of Health Innovation was established in December 2007 as a research institute of the UNSW Faculty of Medicine. The Institute brings together four well-established and successful UNSW research Centres that work in the separate but related areas of clinical governance, health informatics, health systems and patient safety. These are respectively the Centre for Clinical Governance Research directed by Professor Jeffrey Braithwaite, the Centre for Health Informatics directed by Professor Enrico Coiera, the Simpson Centre directed by Professor Ken Hillman and the Centre for Health Systems and Safety Research directed by Professor Johanna Westbrook.

The delivery and the use of clinical information are important factors in determining the safety and effectiveness of clinical processes in hospitals. We are seeking an enthusiastic researcher with excellent analytical, computational and communication skills to join our multi-disciplinary team working on an NHMRC Program Grant on Patient Safety (worth $8.4 million over 5 years). The NHMRC team is examining how health service delivery can be made safer, including through the effective use of decision support technologies.

The successful candidate will conduct research on the design and evaluation of decision support technologies for clinical processes. The successful candidate will also support related research activities of the Patient Safety Informatics team and pursue external research funding in collaboration with other researchers. The researcher will have PhD in either Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction, Engineering, Health and Biomedical Informatics, or a related discipline with a strong background in quantitative research. Excellent oral and written communication skills will be essential.

This is a full-time fixed term position available for 2 years with strong prospects for a further contract period.

Applicants should systematically address the selection criteria in their online application.
