The Centre for Health Research invites applications from highly motivated graduates seeking to undertake one of four doctoral projects in areas that align with the research interests of the Centre.

The Centre for Health Research conducts interdisciplinary research on health services and the factors that determine their use, costs and outcomes. Researchers are addressing priorities for health and for the health system, including mental health, chronic disease, cancer, Aboriginal health, reproductive and sexual health, early life and ageing, drawing on methodologies including observational studies, epidemiology, biostatistics and mixed methods research. The Centre conducts engaged research linking health researchers with potential collaborators and policy partners.

The Centre is in a purpose built state-of-the-art medical education and research facility, 5 minutes walk from Macarthur train station.

There are four projects available:

1. Centre for Health Research Postgraduate Research Award: A project of the applicant's own design which is aligned with one of the Centre's research themes
2. NHMRC Postgraduate Research Award: This project will use linked data for research to evaluate and improve health services for mothers, babies and children
3. NHMRC Postgraduate Research Award: The project will investigate the use, effectiveness and safety of smoking cessation medications prior to and during pregnancy, and has a specific focus on Indigenous women.
4. Australian Postgraduate Award (Industry): The project will examine the construction and experience of fertility in the context of cancer, including patient, partner and health care professional perspectives

Academic Criteria:

  • Applicants should hold a Bachelor Honours degree (Class 1 or 2.1), or equivalent qualifications and/or experience in a related field such as medicine, nursing and allied health fields, public health, psychology, science, mathematics, statistics and computer science
  • Indigenous applicants are particularly encouraged to apply for project number 3

    What does the scholarship provide?

  • Tax free stipend of up to $33,728 per annum for up to 3 years and a funded place in the degree for domestic applicants
  • International applicants may apply but may be charged tuition fees. Information about tuition fees is available at: http://www.uws.edu/international/course_fees
  • Support is available for conference attendance (domestic and international) and fieldwork costs.
  • Commencement dates are negotiable
