PhD Studentships

The University of Queensland, Queensland University of Technology, The University of Tasmania

*** THE UNIVERSITY OF QUEENSLAND: WH BRYAN MINING AND GEOLOGY RESEARCH CENTRE
*** QUEENSLAND UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY: SCHOOL OF MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES
*** THE UNIVERSITY OF TASMANIA: SCHOOL OF ACCOUNTING AND CORPORATE GOVERNANCE

Expressions of interest are sought for PhD studentships associated with research on integrated mining project evaluation in a risk-based framework.

The project is funded by the Cooperative Research Centre for Optimising Resource Extraction (CRC-ORE) and the host universities listed above. Newcrest Mining Pty Ltd and the Quantitative Group Pty Ltd are the project's industrial partners.

The aim of the project is to construct sophisticated statistical models for complex three-dimensional geometallurgical data; to devise rapid computational sampling schemes for such data; and to use the data to conduct financial evaluation of such projects based on statistical accounting analysis and real options.

These studentships offer major opportunities to engage directly with the mining industry and to contribute to a highly innovative program on resource evaluation.

PhD candidates are sought who are interested in any aspect of the project. Candidates must have the equivalent of an Australian honours degree - with at least upper second class honours - in statistics, operations research, mathematics, econometrics, finance, or some other cognisant quantitative discipline. Exposure to, or experience in, the mining industry is strongly desirable.

Positions will be based in Brisbane, Australia. Stipends will be at the usual Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) rate (AUD23,728 per annum in 2012), tax-free, with the usual annual increments. In addition, a tax-free top-up is available of AUD5,000 per annum. In general, there are no tuition fees for Australian nationals, Australian permanent residents, or New Zealand nationals; all other nationals will be liable for full tuition fees unless a fee-waiver can be obtained from the enrolling institution (and these are on a highly competitive basis). Full-time enrolments will be preferred.

Expressions of interest - comprising a CV and brief cover letter - should be sent to Professor Rodney Wolff (contact details below).

The Universities reserve the right not to make an appointment and to vary the above details in the formal advertisement.
