    The School of Public Health, a core unit within the Faculty of Medicine, is a network of academics, research groups and centres that facilitates the study of Public Health.     The School is currently seeking to appoint a highly motivated Research Fellow, or Senior Research Fellow, in Biostatistics to contribute to the Screening and Test Evaluation Program (STEP). STEP is an NHMRC supported program of research in screening and diagnostic test evaluation. It comprises a multidisciplinary team who have expertise in epidemiology, biostatistics, health economics and psychology and covers both methodological and applied research studies.

    In this position, the appointee will provide high level biostatistical advice to researchers and research students concerning the design and statistical methodologies applicable to current and future STEP studies. This will include initiating, developing and conducting research using methods relevant to the evaluation of medical tests used for screening, diagnosis and monitoring.

    In both roles you will:
  • supervise junior researchers, providing them with sound advice on the best approaches to statistical design and analysis. To succeed you will be a strong communicator with excellent interpersonal skills
  • frequently collaborate with successful local and overseas researchers. As such, the capacity to work both autonomously and as part of a dynamic team will be paramount.

    In the Senior Research Fellow role you will:
  • meet the above criteria, and additionally have a history of attracting grant funding, and/or a high level of independence, and experience in a research based leadership role.

    To be successful you will have:
  • a PhD or postgraduate degree in statistics or biostatistics (essential)
  • a history of research evidenced by peer review publications
  • strong statistical computing skills in SAS or equivalent software
  • excellent data analysis skills and an interest in methods for the evaluation of diagnostic and screening tests
  • experience as a Statistician with strong expertise in statistical / biostatistical methodology.

    This position presents an outstanding opportunity to collaborate with a renowned research team and develop expertise in screening and diagnostic testing methodology. You can look forward to publishing works and initiating independent research projects and ideas. The position is full-time fixed term until 31 December 2015, subject to the completion of a satisfactory probation period for new appointees. You would ideally be able to start in early 2012.
