The Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Sydney is the largest and most comprehensive grouping of allied health professions, researchers and teachers in Australia, and is internationally recognised for quality and innovation in teaching and research. The faculty is committed to research-led learning and teaching in a multi-disciplinary context.

The National Centre for Classification of Health (NCCH) is Australia's leading centre of expertise in health classification systems and their applications. Health classifications form the building blocks for high quality information on the clinical and financial performance of Australia's health system. The team at NCCH contains Australia’s top experts in health classification for diseases and other health conditions and health interventions, and their application in activity based funding/casemix. The Independent Hospitals Pricing Authority has now contracted with a consortium led by the University to develop the AR-DRG Classification System up to mid-2017, with an option to extend to mid-2019.

We are seeking to appoint a research statistician to the role of Research Fellow or Senior Research Fellow. You will work with NCCH activity based funding and classification experts to assemble necessary data sets, and to undertake and report on data analysis to support maintenance and development of the Australian AR-DRG Classification System. You will develop an in-depth understanding of all components of the AR-DRG Classification System, specifically the principles underpinning the construction of AR-DRGs. Developing a thorough understanding of the classifications within the WHO Family of International Classifications (WHO-FIC) is essential in order to consider and discuss improvements to the AR-DRGs in light of the introduction of Activity Based Funding (ABF) mechanisms within Australia. This role is pivotal in achieving work-plan milestones and reporting requirements.

To succeed in securing this role you will have:

  • a PhD in a discipline relevant to the work of the NCCH
  • demonstrated skills in statistical analysis and at least one relevant package (e.g., SAS, SPSS)
  • demonstrated understanding of the Australian health care system and current health policy developments including Activity Based Funding (ABF)
  • ability to effectively engage with clinicians, HIMs and clinical coders
  • ability to credibly represent the NCCH at external forums (local, state, national)
  • sound communication and writing skills
  • demonstrated organisational and problem solving skills
  • capacity for intra and inter-state travel (desirable).

For appointment at the level of Senior Research Fellow you will need to demonstrate strong leadership, initiative and innovation in statistical analysis and reporting in various research projects.

All applications must be submitted via the University of Sydney careers website. Visit sydney.edu.au/recruitment and search by the reference number for more information and to apply.
