Post-doctoral Researcher

An excellent opportunity for a post-doctoral researcher in statistical genomics to join a world-class laboratory investigating the role of genomic structural variation in human disease and evolution.

The University of Queensland's Institute for Molecular Bioscience is a leading global research institute. IMB was established in 2000 as UQ's flagship research institute and is the cornerstone of one of the largest bioscience research precincts in Australia.

Every day, 500 scientists, support staff and postgraduate students from more than 40 countries are working to improve quality of life for all. IMB's multidisciplinary research programs focus on advancing personalised medicine, drug discovery and biotechnology. By investigating the basis of growth and development at the genetic, molecular, cellular and organ level, our researchers aim to better understand the development processes and pathways involved in human and animal health and disease. They also work to translate these findings into diagnostics, technologies and therapeutics to more effectively prevent, detect and treat disease, and deliver a sustainable future for Australia through initiatives such as clean energy and new agricultural compounds.

IMB is equipped with state-of-the-art research infrastructure including mouse and zebrafish facilities, advanced imaging, microarray platforms, next-generation sequencing, advanced bioinformatics and proteomics, supporting all aspects of contemporary molecular genetics and cell biology research.

The role

The position will focus on developing algorithms for accurate detection and genotyping of tandem repeat variation from population next generation sequence data; with subsequent application of this technology to assess the role of repeat variation in human disease and genome dynamics and evolution. The post-holder will work collaboratively with scientists from the Institute for Molecular Biosciences, the Queensland Institute of Medical Research, the Mater Hospital and Imperial College London, who are experts in the fields of next generation sequencing and population genetics.

The person

We are seeking a highly motivated scientist with a PhD in bioinformatics, mathematics, statistics, computer science, or a related field. You should have considerable experience with a general purpose programming language such as C++, Java or Python, and preferably also with the statistical programming language R. You should have a strong research interest in genomics, although prior genomics experience is not essential. You must also have the ability to innovate and think laterally, adhere to specific work schedules and work with minimal supervision.

Remuneration

This is a full-time, fixed term appointment for three (3) years at Academic Research level A or B, with the possibility of renewal pending funding. The remuneration package will be in the range $72,443 - $77,764 p.a. (Level A) OR $81,857 - $97,205 p.a. (Level B), plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17% (total package will be in the range $84,759 - $90,984 p.a. (Level A) OR $95,773 - $113,730 p.a. (Level B)). The level of appointment will commensurate with the successful applicant's qualifications and experience.
