Senior Biostatistician

Murdoch Childrens Research Institute

SENIOR BIOSTATISTICIAN

Murdoch Childrens Research Institute
Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne, Australia

Closing Date:30 August 2013

The Murdoch Childrens Research Institute (MCRI), based at the Royal Children's Hospital (RCH) in Melbourne, is the largest child health research organisation in Australia. MCRI's vision is to be a major global contributor to the creation of knowledge, and MCRI's Mission is to obtain knowledge to improve the health of children in Victoria and globally.

This position is in the Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics Unit (CEBU). CEBU is supported jointly by the MCRI and the University of Melbourne Department of Paediatrics to provide a core level of support and training in (epidemiological and clinical) research methods, with a particular focus on biostatistics, to researchers on the RCH campus. CEBU is a well-established unit with a national and international reputation for its high level of biostatistical expertise and engagement in a wide range of research. In conjunction with its role in providing training, advice and direct support in research design and analysis, the team has a substantial research profile, primarily by way of collaboration as co-investigators in clinical and epidemiological research projects, but also for independent methodological research work.

The senior biostatistician will be expected to develop a strong portfolio of research, primarily as a collaborator on epidemiological and clinical randomised and observational studies, but also with the scope to lead research on methodologically oriented problems. The work includes direct contributions to the design, conduct, analysis and reporting of research studies, including the development of research protocols and grant proposals, and contributing to scientific publications. The appointee will also contribute to the research support activities of CEBU, in particular by providing advice in research methods including statistics to clinical and other researchers at the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute (MCRI) and on the Royal Children's Hospital (RCH) campus. The biostatistician will also contribute to CEBU's training program in quantitative research methods and play a role in providing supervision and assistance on research methods to students. The person in this role is expected to work with a significant degree of independence, reporting to the Director and working closely with other members of the CEBU team. Success in the role is likely to lead to continuing opportunities within the organisation.
