Senior Statistician

    The Position:

    In this position, you will take a leading role in developing and using statistical methodology to solve problems and meet the analytical needs of the health services domain. You will lead and contribute your world-class scientific statistical expertise to multi-disciplinary health services research projects that will include applied statisticians, operations researchers, social scientists, clinicians and information science experts. These projects will develop innovative solutions to real-world problems. You will publish papers in high-impact peer reviewed journals and conference proceedings.

    In addition, you will have strong client management skills including working closely with clients, both from government and industry, to scope, propose, develop and run new projects aimed at meeting the future challenges to the Australian health services industry.

    Specifically you will:

  • Propose and develop innovative concepts, theories, and statistical tools and techniques for the analysis of health and medical data
  • Lead research projects and manage staff on research projects.
  • Write research proposals to obtain government and industry funding for research into improving health services delivery.
  • Publish research findings through scientific reports, research proposals and scientific papers, helping ensure high standards of research products and improve uptake of research outcomes within industry and government.
  • Actively engage in state, national and international conferences as well as deliver seminars or workshops within CSIRO and externally.
  • Build CSIRO's research reputation for integrated and multi-disciplinary science related to health services through networking activities and advisory roles/tasks.
  • Contribute to the effective functioning of a research team to help deliver upon CSIRO’s organisational objectives.

    Location: Clayton, Victoria
    Salary: $127K- $141K p.a. plus up to 15.4% superannuation
    Tenure: Indefinite/Ongoing

    To be successful in this position you will need:

  • A PhD in statistics or related field;
  • Evidence of originality, experience and impact in research through a strong publication record, ongoing research agenda and scientific citizenship, in the statistical analysis of health or medical data for health services research;
  • Evidence of supervision of junior researchers and students, or equivalent industry experience
  • Demonstrated national status as an expert, with evidence of international recognition, in the statistical analysis of health or medical data;
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication, negotiation and representational skills, including with a range of people from various scientific backgrounds, and non-scientists including clients and stakeholders;
  • Highly-developed skills and experience in team leadership and proven capacity to operative effectively as part of a team;
  • A proven capacity to initiate, plan, promote and conduct innovative research projects for clients and stakeholders in health services research;
  • Proven track record in generating and coordinating resources to complete and deploy projects on time, within budget, and to high standards in health services research;
  • Experience in collaborating with others in the health services sector, preferably working with hospital datasets
