    The Position:

    CSIRO Computational Informatics seeks to appoint a highly qualified Senior Statistician to join, develop, lead and grow its research activities in the exciting and challenging area of prevention and early diagnosis of targetted diseases including colorectal cancer and metabolic disorders.

    In this position, you will take a leading role in these diverse and multi-disciplinary research programs, working with colleagues in multiple locations across Australia. You will use your broad knowledge of statistical techniques to determine the appropriate methods to be used for the analysis of new types of data and for new studies, and develop new methods and approaches as the need arises. You will publish papers in peer reviewed journals and conference proceedings on both the applications of your work and on the methods you have developed. In addition, you will provide leadership for the Adelaide statistical team, including mentoring and advising current staff, providing advice to Adelaide-based CSIRO researchers and growing the Adelaide team by securing new opportunities and funding.

    Specifically you will:

  • Take a leading role in determining research directions in statistics and bioinformatics with CSIRO
  • Lead the Adelaide statistics team through mentoring and advising current staff, and build the team by securing opportunities for new collaborations within CSIRO
  • Take a leadership role in CSIRO Computational Informatics and in projects within the Preventative Health National Research Flagship
  • Develop proposals for research funding from industry and government programs
  • Publish research findings through scientific reports, research proposals and scientific papers, helping ensure high standards of research products and improve uptake of research outcomes within industry and government
  • Build CSIRO's research reputation for integrated and multi-disciplinary biological science through networking activities and advisory roles/tasks
  • Contribute to research projects aligned with goals of the Preventative Health National Research Flagship. This work is anticipated to include studying the impact of genetic and epigenetic variations on disease diagnosis and progression and the effects of nutritional interventions on colorectal cancer and metabolic diseases

    Location: Adelaide, South Australia
    Salary: $127K- $190K p.a. plus up to 15.4% superannuation

    To be successful in this position you will need:

  • A PhD in statistics or related field, and significant demonstrated experience in statistical research;
  • Evidence of originality, experience and impact in research through a strong publication record, ongoing research agenda and scientific citizenship, in the statistical analysis of biological or medical data;
  • Evidence of supervision of junior researchers and students, or equivalent industry experience
  • Demonstrated national status as an expert, with evidence of international recognition, in the statistical analysis of biological or medical data;
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication, negotiation and representational skills, including with a range of people from various scientific backgrounds, and non-scientists;
  • Skills and experience in team leadership and proven capacity to operative effectively as part of a team;
  • A proven capacity to initiate, plan, promote and conduct innovative research projects in the area of statistics for biological and medical applications;
  • Proven track record in generating and coordinating resources to complete and deploy projects on time, within budget, and to high standards in the area of statistics for biological and medical applications
