Postdoctoral Fellow

The Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies

The Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS) seeks to appoint a motivated and enthusiastic postdoctoral fellow to tackle an exciting and challenging multidisciplinary program to quantify and predict Antarctic marine biodiversity at a range of geographical and ecological scales for spatial protection and management. The position is co-funded by the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) and IMAS.

Applications are invited for appointment to this position, which will be offered on a full-time fixed-term basis for a period of two and a half years.

This position is the key element in integrating contributions across a team of marine ecologists and biostatisticians based at IMAS, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Geoscience Australia (GA) and partners at the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) in Australia, and across the international partners in France and New Zealand.

The position will contribute to the development of spatially explicit statistical analyses of Antarctic marine biodiversity and environment, to provide predictive, ecologically meaningful and quantitative definitions of biodiversity. The project will deliver information required by stakeholders to inform management policy and decision making in the short-term and into the future. The Postdoctoral Research Fellow/Research Fellow will develop components of the project suitable for PhD studies, and take primary responsibility for supervising two PhD students associated directly with the project.

IMAS aspires to become the leading global institution for temperate marine, Southern Ocean, and Antarctic studies, and offers a dynamic and collaborative work environment. Hobart’s marine and Antarctic research community numbers ~1000 staff across the University of Tasmania, the CSIRO and AAD. The University provides excellent employment benefits and a pleasant working environment, while Hobart offers an unparalleled lifestyle with a vibrant culture and unique natural environment.

The appointment will be at Academic Level A/B and will have a total remuneration package of up to $92,016 per annum for Academic Level A (comprising salary within the range $58,868 - $78,646 plus 17% superannuation, with the option of an additional 3% salary loading in exchange for 14% instead of 17% superannuation) and $113,952 per annum for Academic Level B (comprising salary within the range of $82,602 - $97,395 plus 17% superannuation, with the option of an additional 3% salary loading in exchange for 14% instead of 17% superannuation).

Further information can be obtained from the University of Tasmania web site, and Prof Craig Johnson (craig.johnson@utas.edu.au ).

The closing date for applications is 4 October 2013.
