Postgraduate Scholarship
The University of Sydney
HCF Research Foundation Postgraduate Scholarship in
Quantitative Analysis in Health Services Research
DESCRIPTION
A full-time postgraduate scholarship is available for a suitably qualified candidate with a relevant
undergraduate or Master's degree in statistics. This project will include, but not be limited to, the
evaluation of a large scale telemonitoring solution which is about to be deployed by a private health
insurance company to its members with chronic disease. The solution involves remote home
monitoring of patient biometrics including using glucometers and blood pressure measurement
devices. It is at the forefront of telehealth and offers potential to change the future of health care
delivery. The PhD scholar will focus on the quantitative analyses of data for evaluation of this
telemonitoring solution, which will include both randomised and observational study designs.
Analyses will include multivariate linear and logistic models as well as causal inference methods.
An additional component that relates to analysis of health economic data may be available. The PhD
scholar will be based at The George Institute for Global Health (www.georgeinstitute.org ),
commencing their candidature in Semester 2, 2014 at The University of Sydney.
ELIGIBILITY
It would be advantageous, but not essential, for applicants to have knowledge of the Australian
health system. The applicant must have a particular interest in the development of methodological
expertise in implementation and improvement science, with an emphasis on quantitative evaluation
methods. The applicant must have demonstrable prior training in any area of applied statistics,
although a specific background in biostatistics will be advantageous. Individuals who have
previously worked or are currently working in either the public or private health system are
encouraged to apply. Applicants must be Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents or
New Zealand citizens.
AMOUNT AWARDED
The scholarship is tax exempt, valued at between $25,393 and $37,807 per annum, subject to the
awardee's qualifications. The scholarship is limited to three years, subject to satisfactory
progress. In addition, a generous training allowance and top-up funding will be available for
suitable applicants.
