An opportunity exists for a postdoctoral scientist (Research Officer) to join the Bioinformatics Division of The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research (WEHI). The Bioinformatics Division is one of the largest bioinformatics research groups in Australia.

The position will be in the research lab of Professor Gordon Smyth. The lab develops statistical methodology and computational algorithms for analysing transcriptomic data, with a view to understanding gene expression patterns and gene regulatory mechanisms. The lab actively collaborates with biological scientists at the WEHI and elsewhere on problems relating to stem cells, cancer and immunological disorders. The appointee will help develop methods for analysing data from RNA-seq and ChIP-seq experiments, including pathway analysis, expression signature analysis and systems biology. The appointee will collaborate on projects relating to stem cells and cancer.

This position would suit a PhD graduate in statistics with excellent computing skills, but graduates of other relevant disciplines including mathematics, physics, computer science and genetics who have a solid grounding in statistics are also encouraged to apply. Prior experience in genomic research is not essential, but the applicant must be highly motivated to work on problems in medical biology.

The positions will be for 2 years in the first instance. Salary is dependent upon qualifications and experience. Up to 17% superannuation and attractive salary packaging options are available.
