    We are seeking to appoint a highly motivated Research Associate (Level A) or Research Fellow (Level B) in biostatistics to contribute to the Screening and Test Evaluation Program (STEP). STEP is an NHMRC supported program of research in screening and diagnostic test evaluation. It comprises a multidisciplinary team with expertise in epidemiology, biostatistics, health economics and psychology and covers both methodological and applied research studies.

    In this position you will provide statistical advice to researchers and research students concerning the design and statistical methodologies applicable to current and future STEP studies. This will include developing and conducting research using methods relevant to the evaluation of medical tests used for screening, diagnosis and monitoring.

    In this role you will:

  • provide statistical advice and support to STEP researchers and STEP collaborators on screening and diagnostic test evaluation
  • use statistical software to manage and analyse data
  • work both autonomously and as part of a dynamic team
  • contribute to drafting and dissemination of research results.

    If appointed at the Research Fellow level you will also:

  • supervise junior researchers, providing them with high-level advice on the best approaches to statistical design and analysis
  • plan and lead statistical analyses.

    To be successful in securing this role you will have:

  • a Masters or PhD degree in statistics or biostatistics
  • a history of research evidenced by peer review publications (for appointment at level B)
  • experience working as a statistician in a health research environment (for appointment at level B)
  • experience fitting and interpreting complex statistical models (for appointment at level B
  • strong statistical computing skills in statistical software (e.g. SAS, Stata and R)
  • excellent data analysis skills and an interest in methods for the evaluation of diagnostic and screening tests
  • excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to communicate statistical results to non-statisticians.

    This position presents an outstanding opportunity to collaborate with a renowned research team and develop expertise in screening and diagnostic testing methodology. The position is full-time fixed term until 31 December 2015, subject to the completion of a satisfactory probation period for new appointees. You would ideally be able to start by mid-2014.
