The Faculty of Science at the University of Sydney wishes to appoint an outstanding academic as Professor and Head of the School of Mathematics and Statistics.

The School of Mathematics and Statistics is a large and diverse school with research strengths in many areas of mathematics and statistics. There are approximately 65 full-time, continuing academic staff (not including sessional and casual staff) and close to 1000 full-time equivalent student load (FTE). The school has one of the largest undergraduate enrolments across the University with over 2600 students enrolled in first year units of study. We offer majors in Mathematics (Pure and Applied), Financial Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics.

The school's academic staff includes one Australian Laureate Fellow, five ARC Future Fellows and four Discovery Early Career Researcher Awards. A further 20 academics received ARC, Linkage, Office for Learning and Teaching or other forms of external funding over the past three years.

As the Head of School, you will work closely with the Dean and the Dean's Advisory Committee, and within the general outlines of the faculty strategic plan and faculty budget, be responsible for providing academic leadership for the school, including having overall financial and operational responsibility. You will join the seven other heads of school as a key member of the senior faculty leadership group, including serving on the Dean's Advisory Committee. You will play a significant leadership role in the work of the faculty more generally, helping to promote effective cooperation across the schools and the faculty portfolios in light of the faculty's strategic objectives.

The Head of School is supported by a school administrative and technical team of eight, including a school manager, four administrative staff, a finance manager and two members of the technical team. Although this is a senior management role, the Head of School will be expected to continue to contribute to research and scholarship in their area of expertise. Preference may be given to candidates whose scholarship and research expertise complement the existing strengths of the school.

As a Professor of Mathematics or Statistics you will be recognised as a leading authority in the discipline, having a demonstrated ability to maintain a research program of the highest quality supported by external research grants and an established record in successful research supervision.

TERM

The headship is available for a term of four years in the first instance with the possibility of renewal, subject to negotiation. The successful candidate will also be offered a professorial appointment in an appropriate discipline in the school and will retain that position at the conclusion of their headship.

REMUNERATION

The successful applicant will be offered a full-time continuing appointment and a competitive salary package will be negotiated with the successful applicant. Visa sponsorship and relocation support will be available for the successful appointee.
