Melanoma Institute of Australia (MIA) is dedicated to minimising the impact of melanoma through innovative research, treatment and education programs. It evolved from the Sydney Melanoma Unit which was established in the early 1960's to provide a world class treatment facility for melanoma patients. The Institute is now based at the Poche Centre a comprehensive cancer centre for melanoma patients. Located in North Sydney, the Institute is a world leader in melanoma research and education. The Melanoma Research & Biostatistics Group is a key research program within the Institute. Responsible for the management, analysis and collection of clinical information, the work of this team underpins the majority of clinical research activities within the Institute.

At the core of this team is the Melanoma Research Database (MRD). This database was established in the 1960s and now contains clinical information for over 43,000 patients. MRD is the largest single collection of melanoma information in the world.

The Institute is seeking a Senior Statistician to join the Melanoma Research & Biostatistics Group. The role will be required to manage a small team and will coordinate the clinical research projects that are undertaken. It is expected that the successful candidate will assist in the development, design and analysis of research projects, using their statistical expertise to assist with the development and publication of high quality, world leading melanoma research. The role will utilise the large data collection that has been built through the melanoma research database and will support melanoma research projects undertaken at the Institute and within the University of Sydney.

In this role you will:

manage a small team supporting melanoma clinical research at the Institute

act as first point of contact for all MRD & Biospecimen Bank data extractions

act as Secretary on the MIA Research Committee fielding project requests, discussing project specifications with researchers and administering the review process

administer external research projects that require on-going assistance

respond to info enquiries relating to research

assist with project design and methodology to support clinical research studies early in the development

assist with the development of clinical trial protocols ensuring that the outcomes of trials will be statistically relevant

conduct statistical analysis of research studies and/or summarize descriptive statistics for extracted datasets into Institute reports, poster/presentation materials, and/or publications.

To succeed in securing this role you will have:

a master's degree in statistics, PhD desirable

considerable postgraduate experience working in health related discipline with a demonstrated track record of publications

experience working with large health research databases/datasets that includes running database queries (either with MS Access, SQL, SAS or comparable), linking and preparing datasets for export, analysis or reporting of parameters etc.

experience working with appropriate software to produce tables and reports from large datasets (for example pivot tables in Excel, or descriptive tables in SPSS/SAS)

management experience in a research environment including excellent communication skills across multiple disciplines

demonstrated experience in personnel management and leadership of research

an understanding/experience of health information ethics (desirable)

experience conducting statistical analyses (desirable)

experience in oncology research (desirable).
