An opportunity exists for a postdoc with statistical skills and strong bioinformatics/computational biology skills. The position is in the Speed laboratory in the Bioinformatics division at The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research (WEHI), working with the Loi Lab at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, East Melbourne, Australia.

The Speed Lab works on a variety of exciting projects. We collaborate closely with clinicians and biologists generating next-generation sequence (NGS) data, and these collaborations motivate development of new statistical and bioinformatics methods.

The role involves performing analyses under supervision in a range of interesting projects related to the genomics (mutation, copy number, gene expression) of breast cancer, in particular with regard to understanding the biology and prognosis of breast cancer patients that may help guide future therapeutic and biomarker development for breast cancer patients. The position will also involve developing, documenting and maintaining NGS analysis pipelines and other software tools.

Successful applicants should have the following attributes:

  • PhD in statistics, computer science, computational biology, bioinformatics, or a related field.
  • Familiarity with genome databases and statistical analysis methods.
  • Expertise with NGS data analysis.
  • Computational skills including the use of the R programming language.
  • Proficiency with the Linux/Unix Operating System
  • Experience with High Performance Compute Clusters
  • Strong interest in cancer biology, in particular breast cancer and tumor immunology

    Strong communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team are essential.

    This position is available for two years in the first instance. Salary is dependent upon qualifications and experience. Up to 17% superannuation and attractive salary packaging options are available.
