Statistics Jobs in Australia: 2016 January - March

Judy Simpson, 14 March 2016

Research Officer

The Garvan Institute

Research Officer - Epidemiology/Biostatistics

The Garvan Institute is one of Australia's leading medical research institutions with approximately 500 scientists, students and support staff working in research programs in Cancer, Diabetes & Obesity, Immunology & Inflammation, Osteoporosis, and Neuroscience.

A position exists to join an NMHRC funded project examining the relationship between osteoporotic fractures and premature mortality. This is a collaboration between the Garvan Institute, Sydney University and the Sax Institute using data from the 45 & Up Study linked to multiple NSW databases including hospitals admission (APDC), emergency data (EDCC), pharmaceutical (PBS) and death data. The successful candidate will join this collaborative group and work within the dynamic Osteoporosis and Bone Biology research program at the Garvan Institute as part of the Epidemiology and Clinical Studies group.

The incumbent will work with the collaborating team to examine the association between individual fracture types and premature mortality, predictors of mortality and the effect of treatment on mortality. This position will require the ability to work with large linked datasets and analyses of data using techniques such as survival analysis with time-dependent covariates, as well as more advanced statistical models.

This position would provide an excellent post-doctoral opportunity and would also suit a part-time candidate. Alternatively, for a less qualified applicant, there would be opportunity to undertake a PhD within the scope of the proposed research which would be encouraged. The candidate will be expected to contribute to data presentation and manuscript preparation, will be familiar with appropriate graphics packages and/or be willing to learn.

The successful candidate will possess the following key skills and attributes:

  • Postgraduate (Masters or higher) epidemiology or biostatistics degree including techniques for analysis of linked data. An undergraduate degree in biological sciences or medicine is an advantage
  • Demonstrated experience manipulating large datasets within data management and statistical software
  • A working knowledge of SAS or R or Stata
  • Strong statistical skills
  • Experience with analysis of linked routinely collected health data would be an advantage
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and oral skills
  • Clinical knowledge would be advantageous
  • The ability to work independently and as part of a dynamic team
  • The ability to proactively and efficiently execute the administrative functions necessary to support the team effort
  • A strong drive and commitment to produce high quality outcomes.
