POSITION OBJECTIVES

The Data Engineer role in this context will support the Advanced Analytics team in producing strategic insight into the University operations by way of data identification, ingestion and wrangling with the focus of provisioning data conducive to extracting business strategic and operational intelligence.

The position will focus on the provision of data relative to the needs of the Advanced Analytics team. 'Provision' refers to identification, acquisition, storage, processing, documentation, manipulation and general management of the data. The position will be responsible for proposing, designing and implementing solutions to provide new and existing data and analytical toolsets for the Advanced Analytics team.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Propose, design and deliver novel solutions for data provisioning.
  • Maintain, automate and administer solutions, processes and documentation.
  • Identify, acquire, develop and improve existing and new datasets.
  • Contribute to the effective management of projects by providing expert advice and design thinking to meet agreed objectives within established timeframes and resources.
  • Evaluate source data; for quality, transformations, combine and make recommendations of fitness.
  • Mentor and impart knowledge to other members of the team.
  • Collaborate with other Advanced Analytics staff and stakeholders to gather requirements.
  • Collaborate with the Data Warehouse team and IT department to execute solutions.
  • Guide and work with stakeholders (including vendors) in understanding context and delivering data solutions.
  • Communicate persuasively and clearly present findings, either through formal reports or verbally.
  • Lead and promote compliance with relevant legislation and University policies and procedures, including equity and health and safety and exhibit good practice in relation to same.
  • Lead and promote fair, ethical and professional work practices in accordance with the University Code of Conduct.

    SELECTION CRITERIA

    Essential:

  • Completion of a postgraduate qualification, or progress towards postgraduate qualifications in computer science, numerate discipline or similar, and extensive subsequent relevant experience, or an equivalent level of expertise gained from a combination of experience, training or professional accreditation.
  • Demonstrated programming experience with practical knowledge of scripting languages and SQL (whatever flavour), e.g. Python, Javascript, C++, php, ruby.
  • Demonstrated experience in data munging, manipulation, cleansing and blending.
  • Exposure to various data types, sources and storage paradigms.
  • Demonstrated high level proficiency with primary Microsoft Office suite of tools i.e. Excel, Powerpoint, and Word.
  • Excellent oral and written communication, presentation and negotiation skills. Desirable:
  • Knowledge of data science practices, tools and experience in advanced statistical analysis.
  • Knowledge and experience in the use of contemporary data mining and management tools i.e. hadoop, HDFS, mapr and spark will be highly regarded.
  • Experience with cloud computing platforms.
